Are Canva Resumes ATS-Friendly? What Breaks and How to Check
Canva makes the best-looking resumes on the internet, which is exactly the problem. An applicant tracking system doesn't look at your resume. It pulls the text out of the file, splits it into fields (name, email, job titles, dates, skills) and stores that. Whatever Canva did to make the page pretty has to survive that extraction, and a lot of it doesn't.
The answer isn't "never use Canva". It's "know which Canva features break parsing, check the exported file, and pick a different tool if the check fails".
What an ATS does with a Canva file
Canva designs are canvases of positioned elements: each heading, paragraph, icon and shape is its own object placed on the page. When you export, the PDF records where each piece of text sits, not the order a person would read it in. A parser has to reconstruct that order, and with a sidebar or several text boxes it often guesses wrong. Your skills column can end up glued into the middle of a job description, or your dates detached from the roles they belong to.
Greenhouse, a widely used ATS, lists the causes of a failed parse in its own support documentation. The list reads like a description of a typical Canva template:
- "Resumes that include graphics, photos, or word art"
- "Resumes with the name and contact information in the header, footer, or text box"
- "Resumes that have a columned layout"
Greenhouse also notes it "can't parse resumes larger than 2.5MB", which a photo-heavy design exported at print quality can exceed. Among the S&P 500, Greenhouse runs hiring at 23 companies (4.6%) and Workday at 87 (17.3%), according to the ATS Resume AI analysis of all 503 S&P 500 careers sites and 9,260 live job postings, June 2026. You usually can't tell which parser will read your file, so design for the strictest one.
Canva features that break ATS parsing
| Canva feature | What it looks like | What the parser gets | Fix inside Canva |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-column or sidebar layout | Skills and contact strip down the left | Text from both columns interleaved, or the sidebar dropped | Pick a one-column template, or delete the sidebar and move its content into the main column |
| Separate text boxes per section | Neatly placed blocks | Sections read in object order, not page order | Use as few text boxes as possible, stacked top to bottom |
| Icons for phone, email, location | Small glyphs before each detail | Nothing; an icon has no text | Write "Email:" or just the address itself |
| Skill bars, stars, rating dots | "Python ●●●●○" | The word "Python", no level, sometimes stray symbols | Replace with plain text: "Python (advanced)" |
| Headings typed with spaced letters | "E X P E R I E N C E" | Separate letters, not the word "Experience" | Retype as a normal word and use letter spacing instead |
| Photo or background graphics | Headshot, coloured blocks | Larger file, no useful text | Remove for US, UK and Canadian applications |
| Flatten PDF on download | Looks identical | An image: no extractable text at all | Turn Flatten PDF off |
The spaced-letter heading is easy to miss. Greenhouse calls out "A resume with spaces between the letters" because the parser "won't recognize the separate letters as a single word". Many Canva templates style section headings that way.
The Canva download settings that matter
Canva's help centre lists three PDF options on its file types page: PDF Standard at 96 dpi for "illustrations, text, and graphics", PDF Print at 300 dpi with bleed and crop marks, and Compress PDF on paid plans. For an online application, use PDF Standard. Print adds file size and crop marks you don't need.
The setting that does real damage is under Advanced Settings. Canva's flattened PDF guide says flattening "converts the file into a static image, preventing editing in software like Adobe Acrobat". That protects a printed design, but a parser that receives an image gets no text to read. Greenhouse lists resumes "uploaded as an image, rather than a document" as a parse failure.
What about Word? Canva's file types page says DOCX download is "For Canva Docs only. Downloading as DOCX is currently not supported for other design types." A resume built from a Canva resume template can only leave as PDF or an image. If an application portal asks for a .docx, you'll need to rebuild the resume elsewhere. See the PDF vs DOCX guide for which to send when you have the choice.
The 2-minute check for any Canva resume
Download a fresh copy as PDF Standard
Share → Download → File type: PDF Standard. Open Advanced Settings and make sure Flatten PDF is off.
Select all the text in the PDF
Open the file in a browser or Acrobat, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) and copy. If nothing highlights, the PDF is an image and will not parse. Go back to step 1.
Paste into a plain text editor
Notepad, TextEdit in plain text mode, or any code editor. This strips the design and shows roughly what a parser starts from.
Read it top to bottom
Check four things: your name and email are on the first lines; every job title sits next to its employer and dates; section headings are whole words; and no section has been split across another.
Check the file size
Under 2.5MB clears the Greenhouse limit. If it's bigger, remove the photo or background images and export again.
Run it through a parser
For a second opinion, upload the PDF to the free resume checker. It shows the parsed text and a keyword match against a job posting, with no signup.
If the pasted text comes out scrambled, you can spend time fixing the Canva layout or move the content to a plain document. For most people, moving is faster.
Making a Canva resume ATS-safe, or moving off it
If you want to stay in Canva, these changes fix most templates:
If you'd rather not fight the design, rebuild in a word processor. A plain .docx gives you both formats, since you can always save it as a PDF. The free ATS resume templates for Word and the Google Docs versions are single-column, with no tables, text boxes or header content. Copy your Canva text into one section by section. Canva resume vs a plain document
| Typical Canva template | Single-column Word or Docs file | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Columns, boxes, icons | One column of text |
| Export formats | PDF or image only (Canva) | .docx and PDF |
| Contact details | Often in a sidebar with icons | First lines of the body |
| Parser risk | High unless simplified | Low |
| Editing per job | Drag boxes, reflow layout | Edit text in place |
| Best use | Networking, creative portfolios | Online applications |

Frequently asked questions
- Does Canva have ATS-friendly resume templates?
- Some Canva templates and third-party Canva collections are labelled ATS-friendly, but the label is not a guarantee. Judge the exported file instead: a single column, no icons in place of words, contact details as plain text, and text that copies out of the PDF in the right order.
- Is a Canva PDF readable by an ATS?
- Usually, if it was downloaded as PDF Standard with Flatten PDF turned off. A flattened PDF is converted into a static image, so a parser finds no text. If you can select and copy the text in your PDF, a parser can at least extract it.
- Can I download my Canva resume as a Word document?
- Not from a resume design. Canva's help centre says DOCX download is for Canva Docs only and is not supported for other design types. To get a .docx, rebuild the resume in Word or Google Docs.
- Do recruiters dislike Canva resumes?
- Recruiters mostly see what the ATS extracted, so the risk is less about taste and more about a scrambled or empty record. A clean single-column Canva resume that passes the text check reads the same as any other document.
- Should I put a photo on a Canva resume?
- For US, UK and Canadian applications, leave it off. A photo adds file size and no parseable text. Some European and Asian markets expect one; follow local norms there and keep the rest of the layout simple.
