Gemini Prompts for Resume Tailoring: 6 Copy-Paste Prompts
Gemini handles resume tailoring the same basic way any chat assistant does, but it has a few documented features that change how you should prompt it: a small context window on the free plan, file uploads that can come straight from Google Drive, reusable instructions, and a one-click export to Google Docs. The six prompts below are written around those features, and each one tells Gemini to flag what it cannot verify instead of inventing it.
Gemini features that matter before you prompt
These come from Google's own help pages, current as of October 2026:
| Feature | What Google documents | What it means for your resume |
|---|---|---|
| Context window | 32k tokens without a plan, 128k on AI Plus, 1 million on AI Pro | Free: one resume and one posting per chat |
| File upload | Up to 10 files per prompt, 100 MB each | Upload resume and posting together |
| Add from Drive | Requires Keep Activity on and Google Workspace connected | Turning Keep Activity on has privacy consequences, below |
| Gems | Being replaced by skills from November 2026 on personal accounts | Save your rules as a skill instead |
| Export | Share & export → Export to Docs saves a new doc in Drive | Final text lands in Docs, ready to format |
Usage is compute-based, and Google's limits page says it refreshes every 5 hours until you hit a weekly cap. It also advises starting a new chat when you change topic, because long chats cost more to re-read. Treat each job posting as its own chat.
Prompt 1: pull the requirements out of the posting
Paste the full posting, including the "about you" and "nice to have" sections.
Here is a job posting. List, in its exact wording:
1. Required qualifications (tools, certifications, years, degrees)
2. Responsibilities, as short phrases
3. Any term that appears more than once
4. Preferred or "nice to have" items, labelled as such
Quote the posting. Do not paraphrase, merge or add anything.
[paste job posting]Exact wording matters because recruiters search an ATS for strings. "A/B testing" and "experimentation" are different searches. Our keyword guide explains why.
Prompt 2: map the posting to your resume
Now here is my resume. Make a table with three columns:
- Posting term (from your list)
- Where my resume already proves it (quote the line), or "none"
- Gap type: "missing", "worded differently", or "proven"
Do not suggest wording yet.
[paste resume]This map is the most useful output in the whole sequence. "Worded differently" rows are free wins; "missing" rows are where invention creeps in.
Prompt 3: rewrite only what the map supports
Rewrite my experience bullets so each "worded differently" term uses
the posting's exact wording. Rules:
- Keep every employer, job title, date and number exactly as written.
- Only use posting terms that the map shows I have proven.
- If a bullet would be stronger with a term I have NOT proven,
write [confirm: term] instead of adding it.
- If a bullet has no number, add [add: metric] where one belongs.
- One line per bullet, under 30 words, starting with a verb.
Return the full experience section. The [confirm: …] and [add: …] markers turn each risky change into a question for you. Delete a marker only when you can back it up in an interview.
Prompt 4: a summary that names the job
Write a 2-sentence professional summary for this posting using only
facts in my resume. Use the posting's job title once. Include my
strongest number. No adjectives like "passionate" or "results-driven".Prompt 5: the skills line
List the skills section for this application: only skills that appear
in both my resume and the posting, in the posting's spelling, ordered
by how often the posting mentions them.Prompt 6: the honesty check
Run this last, in the same chat.
Compare the rewritten resume to my original. List every claim, tool,
number or responsibility that appears in the new version but not the
original. For each, say whether it is supported by the original text.A rewrite that reads well can still contain a skill you never used, and you are the only one who knows. This prompt makes every difference visible so you can check each one in a minute.
Save the rules once as a skill
Google's Gems help page still documents Gems (name, instructions and optional knowledge files), but the transition page says Gems on personal accounts become skills starting in November 2026. Skills are reusable instructions you call by typing / and the skill's name, and they are available to signed-in users over 18 on personal accounts. Existing Gems are recreated as skills automatically.
Paste this as the skill's instructions:
You tailor resumes to one job posting at a time. Never add an
employer, title, date, tool, certification or number that is not in
the user's resume. Use the posting's exact wording where the resume
already proves the skill. Mark unproven terms as [confirm: term] and
missing metrics as [add: metric]. Always finish with a list of every
change you made. From Gemini to a finished file
- Run prompts 1 to 6 in one fresh chat.
- Under the final response, choose Share & export → Export to Docs. Google says this saves a new doc in Drive.
- Paste the new sections into your existing resume document so you keep its layout. If you need a clean layout, start from our ATS resume template for Google Docs.
- Resolve every
[confirm: …]and[add: …]marker by hand. - Download as .docx or PDF and run it through the free resume checker to confirm it parses.
Check the rewrite against real postings
A good rewrite keeps the terms your field actually asks for. In the ATS Resume AI analysis of all 503 S&P 500 careers sites and 9,260 live job postings, June 2026 (study), the most common terms in full-text postings included:
| Role | Most frequent terms |
|---|---|
| Data scientist | Cross-functional collaboration 47.5%, Python 37.6%, SQL 29.7% |
| Sales | Pipeline management 55.7%, Forecasting 54.6%, SaaS 51.1% |
| Marketing | Cross-functional collaboration 44.0%, Campaign management 39.3%, Brand management 38.1% |
| Product manager | Roadmap 90.3%, Cross-functional collaboration 63.9%, Stakeholder management 52.8% |
If your target posting uses one of these and Gemini dropped it from a bullet where you have the experience, put it back. These numbers describe the S&P 500 sample, not every employer.
Privacy settings to choose first
Gemini's privacy depends on Keep Activity. With it on, Google's Privacy Hub says chats and files can be used to improve its services, including with human reviewers; reviewed chats are disconnected from your account and kept for up to 3 years. Its advice is direct: "Please don't enter confidential information that you wouldn't want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services."
With Keep Activity off, or in a temporary chat, chats are kept for 72 hours and not used to train Google's models. The catch: adding files from Drive requires Keep Activity on. If that trade-off bothers you, download your resume and upload it from your device in a temporary chat, after removing your street address and phone number.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the free version of Gemini enough to tailor a resume?
- For one posting at a time, yes. The free plan's 32k-token context window holds a typical resume and a posting. Start a new chat for each job so the window isn't filled with an earlier application.
- Can Gemini edit my resume directly inside Google Docs?
- Google lists Gemini in Docs as part of the AI Pro plan on its US subscriptions page. On the free plan, the documented route is Export to Docs from the Gemini app, which creates a new document you then copy from.
- Should I upload my resume as a PDF or paste it?
- Either works for a text-based file. Pasting avoids any parsing doubt and shows you exactly what Gemini received. If you upload, ask Gemini to list your job titles and dates back to you first to confirm it read the file correctly.
- Will my Gem stop working when Gems become skills?
- Google says it will recreate Gems as skills automatically when Gems are removed from personal accounts, starting in November 2026. You can also recreate one manually now by copying its instructions into a new skill.
