How to Upload Your Resume to ChatGPT (and Check What It Read)
Uploading a resume to ChatGPT takes ten seconds. Making sure ChatGPT read all of it takes one more prompt, and that second step is the one most people skip. A resume built in a design tool, scanned from paper, or laid out in columns can arrive as partial or jumbled text, and ChatGPT will rewrite whatever it received without telling you something is missing.
File types ChatGPT accepts for a resume
From OpenAI's file upload article, as of October 2026:
| Resume format | Accepted? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DOCX (Word) | Yes | Best choice if your resume is a Word file |
| Yes | Must contain real text, not a scan | |
| TXT | Yes | Cleanest input; nothing to misread |
| Google Docs (.gdoc) | No | Export as PDF or DOCX first |
| Pages, ODT | Not listed | Export to DOCX or PDF |
| Image (PNG, JPG) of a resume | Image upload, 20 MB limit | Not a document; avoid for rewrites |
Size is never the problem with a resume: documents can be up to 512 MB and 2 million tokens per file. The limits that matter are the upload count and how the text is extracted.
Uploading a resume, step by step
- Export the right file. From Word, save as .docx. From Google Docs, choose File → Download → Microsoft Word (.docx) or PDF; OpenAI says .gdoc files can't be uploaded directly.
- Decide on privacy first. Turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings → Data controls, or start a Temporary chat, before you attach anything. Details are in OpenAI's data controls article.
- Attach the file in the message box, then describe what you want, as OpenAI's article outlines: attach, describe the task, review the response.
- Paste the job posting as text in the same message rather than uploading it as a second file; that saves an upload on the Free plan.
- Run the read-back check below before asking for any rewrite.
The scanned-PDF trap
OpenAI's article says that on plans other than Enterprise, ChatGPT uses "text-based retrieval, which extracts digital text from the file rather than its embedded images." For a resume, that means:
- A scanned resume (a photo or scan saved as PDF) may contain no digital text at all.
- A resume exported from a design tool as an image-based PDF has the same problem.
- Icons and skill bars contribute nothing; a skill shown only as a graphic is invisible.
- Text inside a picture, such as a logo with your name, is skipped.
The quick test takes five seconds: open the PDF and try to select a sentence with your cursor. If you can't select it, ChatGPT can't read it either, and neither can many applicant tracking systems. Our PDF vs .docx guide covers how to export a text-based PDF.
Paste or upload?
| Paste the text | Upload the file | |
|---|---|---|
| Free-plan limit | None beyond normal chat use | 3 uploads a day |
| You see what ChatGPT received | Yes, exactly | Only if you ask it |
| Layout problems | Visible immediately as jumbled text | Hidden until you check |
| Saved copy of the file | No separate file | May be saved in Library, separate from the chat |
| Effort | Copy and paste | One click |
Pasting wins for most tailoring. If the pasted text comes out jumbled (sections out of order, dates detached from jobs), your resume has columns, tables or text boxes. That is useful to know: applicant tracking systems extract text in a similar way, which our guide to resume parsers explains.
Check what ChatGPT actually read
After uploading, and before any rewrite, send:
Before we edit anything, list from my resume, exactly as written:
1. Every job title, employer and date range, in order
2. The number of bullet points under each job
3. Every section heading
4. Anything you could not read or that seemed out of orderCompare the answer with your resume. If a job, a date or a section is missing, don't continue: paste the text instead, or fix the file. Then:
Quote the first and last bullet under my most recent job.If those match word for word, ChatGPT has your content. A mismatch usually means it is summarising rather than reading, which happens with long or messy files. OpenAI's accuracy article warns of "fabricated quotes", which is exactly what a wrong quote here would be.
Fixing a resume ChatGPT can't read properly
If the read-back check fails, fix the source rather than working around it, because the same problem affects every applicant tracking system you apply through:
- Scanned or image PDF: rebuild the resume as a text document. If you no longer have the original, retype it into a clean template such as our Word ATS template.
- Columns or sidebar: move everything into a single column, top to bottom.
- Tables for dates or skills: replace them with plain lines; use a tab stop to align dates on the right.
- Contact details in the header: move them into the first lines of the body.
- Skills shown as icons or bars: write them out as words.
Then upload again, or paste, and repeat the read-back prompt. When the job titles, dates and bullet counts come back correct, the file is ready for both ChatGPT and an ATS.
Limits and storage you should know about
- Upload rate. Paid plans allow up to 80 files every 3 hours; Free allows 3 a day, and OpenAI may lower limits at peak times. Failed uploads can count against the limit.
- Context. The pricing page gives the Free plan's instant-model context as about 12 pages of input. One resume and one posting fit; a long chat with many drafts may not.
- Library. Uploaded files can be saved to Library, and deleting the chat does not delete the Library copy, per OpenAI's retention article. Delete both when you're done.
- Projects. If you keep your resume in a ChatGPT project, Free projects hold up to 5 files and Plus up to 25.
From upload to a tailored resume
Once the read-back check passes, paste the posting and use a prompt that forbids invention. Our ChatGPT tailoring prompts are built for that. Copy the result into your original file so you keep its formatting, then check it still parses with the free resume checker or our guide on whether your resume is ATS-friendly.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does ChatGPT say it can't read my resume PDF?
- Most often the PDF is a scan or an image export with no digital text. OpenAI says plans other than Enterprise extract a file's digital text, not its embedded images. Export a text-based PDF or a .docx from your original document, or paste the text.
- Can I upload my resume to ChatGPT from Google Docs?
- Not as a .gdoc file. OpenAI says to export it as PDF or DOCX and upload the exported file. Alternatively, copy the text from Google Docs and paste it into the chat.
- Should I upload my resume and the job posting as two files?
- On the Free plan, paste the posting as text and upload only the resume, or paste both. Each file counts toward the 3 uploads a day.
- Does ChatGPT keep my uploaded resume?
- It can. Files may be saved in Library separately from the chat, and deleting the chat does not delete them. Delete the file from Library as well, or use a temporary chat that you don't save.
