Apple Pages Resume Templates and ATS: How to Pick One That Parses
Apple Pages ships with resume templates in its template chooser, and many of them look polished. Whether one survives an applicant tracking system depends less on how it looks and more on which of Pages' two document types it was built as. You can check that in a few seconds, before you type a word.
The two kinds of Pages template
Apple's Pages guide splits every document into two types. Word-processing documents "have a body text area where you type", and text flows from one page to the next. A page layout document "is like a canvas": there is no body text area, so any text you add goes into a text box that you position by hand.
That difference is what a parser sees. In a word-processing template, your name, sections and bullets are one stream of text in reading order. In a page layout template, each block is a separate floating object, and the order a parser reads them in is the order they were placed in the file, not the order they appear on the page.
Apple's own document-type article says page layout suits "newsletters and flyers with many graphic elements". That describes many of the most decorative resume designs too, so check before you commit to one.
What breaks a parse, in Greenhouse's words
Greenhouse is unusually direct about why resumes fail. Its parse-failure article lists these formatting causes, among others:
- "Resumes with the name and contact information in the header, footer, or text box"
- "Complex resumes with tables, headers, and footers"
- "Resumes that have a columned layout"
- "Resumes that include graphics, photos, or word art"
- "Resumes that are uploaded as an image, rather than a document (such as a .docx or .pdf)"
It also says files larger than 2.5MB can't be parsed. Greenhouse ran the hiring site at 23 of the 503 S&P 500 companies (4.6%) in the ATS Resume AI analysis of all 503 S&P 500 careers sites and 9,260 live job postings, June 2026 (breakdown). Workday led with 87 companies (17.3%). The same layout rules are the safe default for both.
How Pages template features map to parse risk
| Template feature | Where you see it in Pages | Parse risk | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page layout document | No body text; every block is a separate box | High: Greenhouse names text boxes | Pick a word-processing template, or rebuild in one |
| Name in a header | Contact line inside the page header area | High: named by Greenhouse | Move it to the first line of the body |
| Sidebar column | Skills or contact panel beside experience | High: "columned layout" | Move it below experience, one column |
| Photo or icon set | Headshot, phone and email icons | Medium: "graphics, photos" | Delete; write "Email:" and "Phone:" as text |
| Skill bars or ratings | Shapes showing skill level | Medium: shapes carry no text | Replace with a plain comma-separated list |
| Section headings as text | Bold or styled paragraph text | Low | Keep; plain words like "Experience" parse well |
Most of the risk sits in the first row. A page layout template can be one column and still fail, because each "column" of the design is its own box.
How to check which type a template is
Run this before you fill anything in. It takes under a minute and needs no extra software.
Create a document from the template
In Pages on a Mac, choose File > New, pick the resume template in the template chooser, and click Create. Pages can pre-fill templates such as "stationery, resumes, and books" from your Contacts card, Apple notes. Check that the pre-filled details are correct.
Open the File menu
Apple's rule: "If 'Convert to Page Layout' appears in the File menu, it's a word-processing document." If the menu offers to convert the other way, it's a page layout document.
Confirm in the Document sidebar
Click Document in the toolbar. If the Document Body checkbox is selected, the file is word-processing. If it isn't, everything on the page is in text boxes.
Look for a header and a sidebar
Click your name. If the header area highlights, move the name into the body. If skills or contact details sit in a separate panel beside your experience, plan to move them below it.
Delete photos, icons and skill bars
Replace each icon with its label in text. A recruiter searching for "Python" finds the word, not a rating bar.
If the template turns out to be page layout, Apple says you can convert a document "to the other type", but its guide doesn't say what happens to text already placed in boxes. Don't count on conversion to fix the reading order. It's usually safer to paste the text into a word-processing template, or into one of the .docx files below.
Exporting from Pages: Word or PDF, never .pages
Applicant tracking systems ask for Word or PDF. Greenhouse's article names ".docx or .pdf" as the document formats it contrasts with image uploads. A .pages file is Apple's own format, so treat it as a working copy only.
Apple's export guide gives the route: "choose File > Export To > [file format]". It also notes that exporting saves a separate copy, so your .pages original stays as it was.
- For a Word file: choose File > Export To > Word, then open the .docx in Word or Google Docs if you can, to see what moved.
- For a PDF: choose File > Export To > PDF. Apple says a higher Image Quality setting makes a larger file, so keep it low if your resume has any images. That keeps you well under Greenhouse's 2.5MB limit.
- Check for a password. Apple warns that if the original file has a password, it carries over to exported PDF and Word copies. A locked file is one a recruiter, and a parser, can't open.
- Do a reading-order check. Open the exported file, select all, and paste it into TextEdit as plain text. If your name comes first and each job's title, dates and bullets stay together, a parser will see the same order.
When the application form allows either format, the Word template guide covers when .docx is the safer choice.
A free alternative that already passes these checks
If none of your Pages templates is a clean word-processing document, start from a file built for parsing. These are our own .docx files: one column, zero tables, zero text boxes, the name in the body rather than a header, and each under 10 KB. They open in Pages through File > Open, as well as in Word and Google Docs, with no signup.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I upload a .pages file to a job application?
- Avoid it. Applicant tracking systems ask for Word or PDF, and Greenhouse names .docx and .pdf as the document formats it expects. Export a copy with File > Export To > Word or PDF and upload that.
- Is Word or PDF better when exporting a resume from Pages?
- Both work if the layout is one column with no text boxes. Use Word when the posting asks for it or when a recruiter may need to edit the file. Use PDF when you want the look fixed. Either way, paste the exported text into TextEdit to check the reading order.
- Does Pages on iPhone or iPad have the same check?
- Yes. Apple says to tap Document Options, then Document Setup, then Document. If Document Body is turned on, it's a word-processing document. If it's off, the text is in boxes.
- Will converting a page layout template to word-processing fix it?
- Don't rely on it. Converting changes the document type, but Apple doesn't say what happens to text already placed in text boxes. Paste the text into a word-processing template or a single-column .docx instead.
- Can I use a Pages template on Windows?
- Not in the Pages app. Pages runs on Mac, iPhone and iPad, and in a browser through iCloud. On Windows, start from a .docx template in Word or Google Docs.
