ChatGPT Resume Template: A Free ATS Layout + the Prompt to Fill It

By Roy7 min read

A "ChatGPT resume template" usually means one of two things: a prompt that makes ChatGPT write the resume, or a file layout to put that text into. You need both, and they work best kept apart. ChatGPT is good at wording. The layout should come from a plain document that an applicant tracking system can read in order.

Why the layout shouldn't come from ChatGPT

Asking ChatGPT to "make a resume template" gets you text with Markdown headings, or a layout described in words. Neither is a file you can send. The parts that decide whether a parser reads your resume correctly sit in the document: whether content is in one column, whether dates sit in a table cell, and whether your name lives in a header.

Greenhouse is specific about what breaks parsing. Its parse-failure article lists files over 2.5MB, resumes "uploaded as an image, rather than a document (such as a .docx or .pdf)", text with spaces between the letters, and a "columned layout" or graphics. Greenhouse ran the hiring site at 23 of the 503 S&P 500 companies, 4.6%, in the ATS Resume AI analysis of all 503 S&P 500 careers sites and 9,260 live job postings, June 2026 (breakdown). Workday led with 87 companies (17.3%).

So split the job. The template fixes the structure once, and ChatGPT writes the words for each application.

Free templates that hold the layout

These are our own .docx files. Each one has zero tables, zero text boxes and a single column, with dates on the same line as the job title rather than in a table cell. Section names use real Heading 2 styles. Each is 9 KB, far below Greenhouse's 2.5MB limit. All open in Word and Google Docs with no signup.

Using Google Docs? You can't upload a .gdoc file to ChatGPT. OpenAI's upload article says to "Export it as PDF or DOCX, then upload the exported file." To edit one of these templates in Docs, upload the .docx to Drive and open it there. The Google Docs template guide covers the checks to run after converting.

The prompt that fills the template

The prompt gives ChatGPT the template's exact sections, so the output drops straight into the file. Paste your resume and the job posting as text below it. That also saves an upload: OpenAI says "Free users are limited to 3 file uploads per day."

You are filling in a resume template. Output plain text only: no Markdown,
no tables, no bold, no emojis.

Use exactly these sections, in this order, with these headings:
SUMMARY
WORK EXPERIENCE
EDUCATION
SKILLS

Rules:
1. Use only facts from MY RESUME. Do not invent employers, dates, tools,
   titles or numbers.
2. If the JOB POSTING asks for something my resume doesn't show, don't add
it. List it at the end under "GAPS TO CONFIRM".
3. If a bullet would be stronger with a number I didn't give, write
[add: what number] instead of guessing.
4. For each role, write the line as: Job Title — Company, City, ST | Month YYYY – Month YYYY
then 2–4 bullets, each starting with an action verb.
5. Use the job posting's exact wording for skills I really have.
6. SUMMARY: 2–3 sentences that name the job title from the posting.

MY RESUME:
[paste]

JOB POSTING:
[paste]

For the entry-level or Jake's-style template, swap in that file's headings in the same order. The template's own hints are written for you, not for ChatGPT. Delete them as you paste.

How to move ChatGPT's text into the file

  1. Download one template and open it in Word or Google Docs

Pick from the table above. Keep the file's headings. They are real heading styles, so the section structure survives export.

  2. Run the prompt with your resume and one job posting

One posting per conversation. Mixing two postings blends their keywords.

  3. Resolve every [add: …] and GAPS TO CONFIRM line

Supply the real number or delete the bullet. If a gap is real, leave it out of the resume and prepare to address it in the interview.

  4. Paste each section as plain text

In Word, use Paste Special → Unformatted Text. In Google Docs, use Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V on Mac). This keeps the template's fonts and stops Markdown symbols coming through.

  5. Replace every placeholder

Search the file for "FIRST LAST", "Company Name", "City, ST", "20XX" and square brackets. Greenhouse says it skips data it can't verify as real, such as the name "First Last" or the employer "Company 1".

  6. Save as .docx or a text-based PDF and run a parse check

Copy everything (Ctrl+A) and paste it into a plain text editor. If the lines come out in reading order, a parser will see the same order.

What ChatGPT gets wrong when it also does the layout

If you skip the template and ask ChatGPT for a finished resume, the same problems come back. Most are formatting, not wording:

ProblemWhat you seeFix
Markdown symbols**Skills**, ### or - at the start of linesPaste as plain text into a styled template
Tables for alignmentDates in a second columnKeep dates on the title line, as the template does
Invented detailsA tool or number you never gave itRule 1 in the prompt, then check every line
Placeholders left in"Company Name", "[X]%"Search the file before you send it
Two-column suggestionsSkills sidebar beside experienceKeep a single column; Greenhouse lists columned layouts as a parse risk

The invented-details row matters most. Can ChatGPT rewrite my resume? covers why it happens and how to catch it. ChatGPT prompts to tailor a resume has longer prompts for each section.

Upload or paste: the limits that apply

If you'd rather upload your current resume than paste it, OpenAI's upload article supports DOCX, PDF and TXT. Documents can be up to 512 MB, with a cap of 2 million tokens per file. Paid plans allow up to 80 uploads every 3 hours, and the Free plan allows 3 a day.

One detail affects templates in particular. OpenAI says ChatGPT can analyse images in PDFs attached directly to a chat, but for files saved in a project or a GPT, "Embedded images may not be included automatically." Either way, an applicant tracking system mostly reads text. A skill shown only as an icon or a rating bar won't reach a keyword search, however well ChatGPT describes it. Our guide to uploading a resume to ChatGPT has a read-back check to run first.

Checking the result against the posting

A filled template is only as good as its match to the job. Paste the finished resume and the posting into the free resume checker, which needs no account, to see the match score and missing keywords. If you'd rather not run prompts at all, ATS Resume AI's optimizer is free for 3 days with 5 AI rewrites and no card. Each run shows the score, the keyword gaps and the start of the tailored resume. Terms it can't trace to your resume come back as [confirm: …], not invented.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT create a resume template file?
It can describe a layout or write Markdown, but it does not give you a styled, single-column document by default. Start from a .docx template and have ChatGPT write only the text for each section.
Does Google Docs have a resume template I can use with ChatGPT?
Google Docs has a Template gallery at the top right of the Docs home screen. Check any gallery template for tables and columns before using it. Or upload one of the single-column .docx files on this page to Drive and open it in Docs.
Should I ask ChatGPT for a resume in a table?
No. Tables and columns can be read out of order by applicant tracking systems, and Greenhouse lists a columned layout as a reason a resume fails to parse. Ask for plain text and let the template handle alignment.
Why does my ChatGPT resume have asterisks and hashtags in it?
ChatGPT formats replies in Markdown. Paste as unformatted text (Paste Special in Word, Ctrl+Shift+V in Google Docs), and add 'no Markdown' to your prompt.
Is a ChatGPT resume template free?
Yes. The five .docx templates on this page are free with no signup, and the prompt works on the Free ChatGPT plan if you paste text instead of uploading, since Free accounts get 3 file uploads a day.
