Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description With AI, Free: Every Option

By Roy7 min read

You can tailor a resume to a job description with AI without paying anything. Every major chat assistant has a free tier that can rewrite a pasted resume against a pasted posting, and most dedicated resume tools have a free plan that does part of the job. What differs is where each free plan stops. This page lists every genuinely free option we could verify, with the exact limit from the vendor's own page as of October 2026.

Free AI assistants and their exact limits

General assistants are the most generous free option, because they limit usage rather than features.

Free tiers of general AI assistants (vendor documentation, October 2026)
AssistantFree limit that mattersContext for your resume
ChatGPT3 file uploads a day; unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse guardrails27K tokens (~12 pages)
GeminiUp to 10 files per prompt, 100 MB each; usage refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly cap32k tokens
ClaudeUp to 20 files per chat; up to 5 projects; rolling five-hour usage windowUp to 1M, varies by model
Microsoft CopilotUp to 20 files per conversation, 50 MB each; limited free versionNot published

Sources: OpenAI's upload article, Free tier FAQ and pricing page; Google's upload and limits pages; Anthropic's upload article, projects article and pricing; Microsoft's file upload page and pricing FAQ.

A two-page resume and a long posting fit inside every one of these context windows. OpenAI's data controls article describes using ChatGPT without signing in, with the training setting saved in that browser. Gemini's upload page says you must be signed in to upload files, and Microsoft's Copilot privacy controls are described for users signed in with a Microsoft account.

Free plans of dedicated resume tools

Dedicated tools add a workflow (keyword matching, scores, templates), and their free plans stop at a specific point.

ToolWhat the free plan includesWhere it stops
Jobscan5 resume scans a month, 5 ATS and recruiter findingsUnlimited scans and AI optimization are paid
TealUnlimited resumes and job tracking; 10 AI bullet credits, 2 summaries, 2 cover lettersKeyword matching shows the top 5 terms
Rezi1 resume, AI resume writer and editor, 3 PDF downloadsNo Word download; limited Rezi Score and keyword targeting
HuntrUnlimited base resumes, free PDF export, 2 job-tailored resumesUnlimited AI tailoring is Pro only
ATS Resume AI3 days, 5 AI rewrites, no card; ATS score, keyword gaps and the first part of the rewriteFull rewrite, copy and PDF/Word need the Pass

Teal and Rezi both say no card is needed to start. Huntr's FAQ says there is no free trial of Pro, but the free plan includes a small number of AI credits.

Which free option fits which situation

  • One or two applications: any free assistant, with the prompts below. Nothing else needed.
  • Many applications from one resume: Claude's free projects let you store the master resume once; ChatGPT works if you paste rather than upload.
  • You want a match score, not just a rewrite: Jobscan's 5 monthly scans or Teal's free keyword matching show what you're missing; a free assistant then does the rewrite.
  • You need a downloadable formatted file for free: Huntr exports PDF free; Rezi gives 3 PDF downloads. With a chat assistant, you paste the rewrite into your own Word or Google Docs file.

A free workflow that works in any assistant

  1. Get the posting's terms. Paste the posting and ask: "Quote every required and preferred qualification, tool and responsibility exactly. No paraphrasing." Or use the free resume keyword generator.
  2. Map them. Paste your resume and ask for a table: posting term, the resume line that proves it, or "none".
  3. Rewrite only proven bullets. Instruct: keep employers, titles, dates and numbers unchanged; write [confirm: term] for anything unproven and [add: metric] where a number is missing.
  4. Audit. Ask for a list of every claim in the new version that is not in the original.
  5. Check the file. Paste the result into your resume document, then run it through the free resume checker, which needs no account.

Step 3's rules matter most. OpenAI's own accuracy article says ChatGPT "might sound confident—even when it's wrong," and that applies to every assistant on this list. Our ChatGPT prompts and AI tailoring guide have fuller versions.

Point the free tools at the right terms

Free tiers run out faster when you rewrite blindly. Knowing what postings in your field ask for lets you target the bullets that matter. In the ATS Resume AI analysis of all 503 S&P 500 careers sites and 9,260 live job postings, June 2026 (study):

These describe the S&P 500 sample, not every employer. If your posting uses one of these terms and your resume proves it in other words, that bullet is the first one to rewrite.

Combine two free tools instead of paying

Because the free plans stop at different points, two of them together often cover what one paid plan does. A common pairing: a dedicated tool's free match check to see which posting terms are missing, then a free assistant for the rewrite. For example, Jobscan's 5 monthly scans or Teal's top-5 keyword view tells you the gaps, and ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot rewrites the bullets that can honestly close them. Re-check with the same tool afterwards so you compare like with like; a change in one tool's score means more than a comparison across tools, as our guide to free ATS checker accuracy explains.

What "free" costs you instead

Free tiers are paid for in other ways, and it's worth knowing which:

  • Training data. ChatGPT and Gemini may use consumer chats to improve their models unless you change a setting or use a temporary chat, per OpenAI and Google's Privacy Hub. Remove your address and phone number before pasting.
  • Ads. OpenAI says ads may appear on ChatGPT's Free tier in certain countries, and Microsoft says Copilot users without a Microsoft 365 subscription might see ads.
  • Time. Free assistants give you text, not a formatted file. Budget ten minutes to paste and format; our Word template makes that faster.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI resume tailor with no sign-up?
OpenAI documents signed-out use of ChatGPT, so you can paste a resume and a posting without an account. If you do, turn off Improve the model for everyone in that browser's settings first; OpenAI says the choice is saved in that browser.
Which free option gives the most rewrites?
The general assistants, because they limit usage rather than counting rewrites. ChatGPT Free offers unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse guardrails. Dedicated tools' free plans cap specific features, such as Teal's 10 AI bullet credits or Huntr's 2 tailored resumes.
Can I get a free Word file of my tailored resume?
Not from most dedicated tools' free plans: Rezi's free plan lists PDF but not Word, and Huntr's free plan lists PDF export. With a chat assistant you paste the text into your own Word document, which costs nothing.
Do free AI tools make up experience?
They can, free or paid. Tell the assistant to keep every employer, title, date and number unchanged and to mark unproven terms instead of adding them, then compare the result with your original line by line.
