LibreOffice Resume Templates and ATS: Pick, Fill and Save One That Parses
LibreOffice Writer is a free word processor, and plenty of people write their resume in it. Applicant tracking systems don't care which program made the file. They care about two things you control in Writer: how the template lays out the text, and which file format you upload.
What LibreOffice does differently from Word
LibreOffice saves in OpenDocument format by default, so a Writer file ends in .odt. Its Load/Save options page has an "Always save as" setting that "specifies how documents of the type selected on the left will always be saved as this file type". You can switch it to Word, or leave it on .odt and save a Word copy only when you apply.
The project describes itself as free: LibreOffice gives "access to our office productivity tools, at no cost to you", says its about page, which currently announces version 26.8.
Applicant tracking systems ask for Word or PDF. Greenhouse's parse-failure article names ".docx or .pdf" as the document formats it contrasts with image uploads. It doesn't mention .odt, so don't assume a portal will read one. Send the format it names.
What breaks a parse, in Greenhouse's words
Greenhouse is unusually specific about formatting. Its article lists these causes, among others:
- "Resumes with the name and contact information in the header, footer, or text box"
- "Complex resumes with tables, headers, and footers"
- "Resumes that have a columned layout"
- "Resumes that include graphics, photos, or word art"
It also says Greenhouse "can't parse resumes larger than 2.5MB". Greenhouse ran the hiring site at 23 of the 503 S&P 500 companies (4.6%) in the ATS Resume AI analysis of all 503 S&P 500 careers sites and 9,260 live job postings, June 2026 (breakdown). Workday led with 87 companies (17.3%). Workday doesn't publish an equivalent list, so Greenhouse's rules are the safest public baseline for any portal.
How Writer features map to parse risk
Each item on Greenhouse's list has a Writer equivalent. Most decorative resume templates use at least one of them.
| Writer feature | Where you find it | Parse risk | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text frame | Insert > Frame; a box you can drag anywhere | High: Greenhouse names text boxes | Retype the text into the body |
| Page header with contact details | Insert > Header and Footer > Header | High: named by Greenhouse | Put your name and contact line at the top of the body |
| Table used for layout | Table > Insert Table; dates in one cell, job in another | High: "tables" | Use tab stops for right-aligned dates |
| Multiple columns | Format > Columns, or a sidebar section | High: "columned layout" | One column; move skills below experience |
| Icons, photo or skill bars | Images and shapes | Medium: "graphics, photos" | Write "Email:" and "Phone:" as text |
| Styled headings | Heading 1 / Heading 2 paragraph styles | Low | Keep; plain words like "Experience" read well |
LibreOffice's help defines a frame as "a container for text and graphics that you can place anywhere on a page", and notes you can use one "to apply a column layout to text". That is exactly what a parser reads out of order. Its header and footer guide describes headers as areas "in the top and the bottom page margins". Anything you put there sits outside the main text, which is why Greenhouse flags it.
How to check a template before you fill it in
Run this on any template, whether it came from LibreOffice's own Templates dialog, the extensions site or a download. It takes about two minutes.
Open the template
Choose File > Templates > Manage Templates, or press Ctrl+Shift+N (Cmd+Shift+N on a Mac). LibreOffice's Template Manager page says that to find more online, "choose Extensions to open a search window". Open the resume template you want to check.
Show the formatting boundaries
Turn on View > Formatting Marks and View > Text Boundaries. Frames, table cells and the header area now show as outlined boxes, separate from the main text.
Open the Navigator
Press F5. The Navigator lists Tables, Frames, Images and Sections. A resume that parses cleanly should list no tables and no frames. A section is only a problem if it has more than one column.
Click your name
If the cursor lands in the header area at the top of the page, the contact block is in the header. Cut it and paste it as the first lines of the body.
Do a plain-text paste test
Select all (Ctrl+A), copy, and paste into a plain-text editor. If your name comes first and each job's title, dates and bullets stay together in order, a parser will see the same order.
If the Navigator shows frames or tables, don't try to fix the layout piece by piece. It's usually faster to paste the text into a template that's already clean.
Saving and exporting: .docx or PDF, never .odt
Keep your working copy in whatever format you like. Change the format only for the copy you upload.
- For a Word file: choose File > Save As and pick the Word (.docx) file type. LibreOffice then asks which format to use; choose the Word one. The options page notes you can get "a warning message when you save a document in a format that is not OpenDocument", so that prompt is expected.
- For a PDF: choose File > Export As > Export as PDF. On the General tab, leave "Tagged PDF" on if it's offered. LibreOffice's PDF export help says a tagged PDF "contains information about the structure of the document contents".
- Leave Hybrid PDF off. That option exports "a .pdf file containing two file formats: PDF and ODF", which makes the file bigger without helping a parser. Keep the file well under Greenhouse's 2.5MB limit.
- Re-open the exported copy in a different program (Word, Google Docs or a PDF viewer) and repeat the plain-text paste test.
When a form accepts either format, the Word template guide covers when .docx is the safer pick.
Free .docx templates that open in LibreOffice
If none of your Writer templates passes the Navigator check, start from a file built for parsing. These are our own .docx files. Each has one column, no tables, no text boxes and no header part, with the name in the body, and each is under 10 KB. They open in LibreOffice Writer through File > Open, as well as in Word, Google Docs and Pages, with no signup.
| Template | Section order | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| [Classic](/downloads/ats-resume-template-classic.docx) | Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills | Two or more years of experience |
| [Entry-level](/downloads/ats-resume-template-entry-level.docx) | Summary, Education, Experience & Projects, Skills | Students and recent graduates |
| [Career change](/downloads/ats-resume-template-career-change.docx) | Summary, Relevant Skills, Work Experience | Moving into a new field |
| [Harvard-style](/downloads/ats-resume-template-harvard.docx) | Education first, then experience and activities | Students outside tech |
| [Jake's-style](/downloads/jakes-resume-template.docx) | Education, Experience, Projects, Technical Skills | Software and engineering roles |
Three are set in Calibri and the Harvard and Jake's files in Times New Roman. If your system lacks a font, see the best font for a resume guide for close substitutes. You can keep editing them as .docx in Writer. If you save as .odt while you work, save a .docx copy again before you upload.
The same frame-and-text-box problem appears in other tools. See the Apple Pages resume template check, Are Canva resumes ATS-friendly? and the single-column layout guide.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I upload an .odt resume to a job application?
- Avoid it. Applicant tracking systems ask for Word or PDF, and Greenhouse names .docx and .pdf as the document formats it expects. Save a .docx copy or export a PDF from LibreOffice and upload that.
- Is a LibreOffice .docx the same as one saved in Word?
- For a simple resume, close enough. Text, paragraph styles, bold and tab stops carry over. Frames, complex tables and unusual fonts are where conversions shift. Re-open the .docx in Word or Google Docs and do a plain-text paste test before you send it.
- Does LibreOffice come with resume templates?
- Its Template Manager (File > Templates > Manage Templates) holds whatever templates your install includes, and its Extensions button searches extensions.libreoffice.org for more. Whatever you pick, run the Navigator check for frames and tables before you fill it in.
- Which fonts should I use in LibreOffice for a resume?
- Use a font the recruiter's computer also has, or export a PDF, which embeds the fonts. If you send a .docx in a font Word doesn't have, it substitutes another and the spacing can shift. The best font for a resume guide covers safe choices.
- How do I right-align dates without a table in LibreOffice?
- Use a right tab stop. Open Format > Paragraph > Tabs, add a Right tab at the right margin, then type the job title, press Tab and type the dates. The dates line up on the right and stay in the same line of text.
